Session Title: A Stranger in My Own Land
|Howard Goldenberg (Australia)|
Join GP Howard Goldenberg to discuss his encounters with Aboriginal mental ill health. These have ranged from the confronting to the alarming to the mystifying. What can we do? What should we do? Whose business is it? (Bear in mind 'business' has quite distinctive connotations in Indigenous life.)
About: Howard Goldenberg is a general practitioner who works a couple of months every year as a locum in remote indigenous communities. In such settings, he feels globally out of his depth. Howard has written of these experiences in 'Raft' (Hybrid, 2009) - the unexpectedly successful memoir of his moral disorientation in his encounters with his countrymen. The book has become a sort of Guide to the Unexpected for clinicians new to remote Aboriginal health.
